15 Ways to Squeeze the Last Drop Out of Summer in Washington State

by Don & Susie Karstedt

As summer makes its slow, golden descent toward autumn, there’s still time to fill your days with memories and adventures. Don and I love Summer and so we love helping our clients make the most of the season, because if you have lived in the northwest for any amount of time you know the rain is just around the corner

Washington State offers an incredible mix of ways to savor every ray of sunshine and every wildflower bloom before sweater weather returns. Whether you’re in the mood for an outdoor thrill, a quiet escape, or a local foodie indulgence, we’ve gathered some of the best ways to round out your late-summer bucket list—complete with a special spotlight on some of the state’s most spectacular hikes.

Pacific Northwest Summer Fun—Before the Leaves Turn

  • Catch a Sunset at Kerry Park
Take in the stunning Seattle skyline with Mount Rainier as your backdrop. A summer evening classic for friends, families, and romantics alike.

  • Paddle, Swim, or Picnic by the Lake
Head to Lake Tapps, Green Lake, or Lake Washington for kayaking, swimming, or a relaxing picnic—perfect before cooler days set in.

  • Pick Blueberries or Visit a Sunflower Festival
Late summer is prime time for berry picking and wandering through sunflower fields that stretch toward the sun. Snoqualmie Valley Sunflower Festival is a month long event celebrating the Sunflower and all the various Farms and agriculture in the Snoqualmie Valley from North Bend to Monroe. It starts Aug 14 and runs until Sept 14.

  • Take a Ferry Ride to the Islands
Explore Bainbridge or Vashon Island for charming shops, local eats, and the magic of Puget Sound on the open water. The Summer Arts Fest thru August 31 is happening at the Vashon Center for the Arts.

  • Dine outside and experience the local flavors of the NW.

The Seasonal Table at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands (Seattle)has a four-part summer dinner series hosted by Tilth Alliance, these seasonal, chef-partnered dinners highlight produce grown on Seattle's largest urban farm. Don and I first experienced something like this in Northern Idaho last year, and we were hooked. The Seasonal Table captures that same blend of community, creativity, and connection — the kind of evening that reminds you food is so much more than what’s on the plate.

  • Attend a Free Outdoor Concert or Local Festival
Try Crystal Mountain Resort’s Mountain Music Series, There is also Tunes at Tapps (Allan Yorke Park, Bonney Lake) Wednesdays in July and August, Market 5–8pm, Concert 6:30–8pm.

  • Enjoy Mini Golf or a Museum Day
Perfect for families or date night when you want something low-key but still memorable.
